Applications should be made on official QMUL application forms. You are highly encouraged to contact a member of the School in order to discuss potential research areas or projects first.

There are two ways to apply:

Apply online – using our online application form. This is the preferred method of application. Please note that we offer two different research degrees, one in Mathematics and one in Statistics:

PhD in Mathematics (link is external)

PhD in Statistics (link is external)

Paper-based application

To request a paper-based Queen Mary postgraduate application form, please contact the Postgraduate Administrative Officer by emailing maths-pg@qmul.ac.uk (link sends e-mail), or by writing to the address below.

Completed applications, including university transcripts and references, should be returned as soon as possible to:

Postgraduate Programme Administrator

School of Mathematical Sciences

Queen Mary, University of London

Mile End Road

London E1 4NS

UK

You will note that the application form asks for a “500 word research proposal”. We realise that many applicants will not at this stage have anything in mind that is sufficiently well formed to count as a research proposal. In that case, we encourage you to use this section to tell us about your strengths and interests: which courses you did particularly well in, which particularly interested you, and what background reading you may have done beyond the demands of a specific course.

We accept students onto our research programmes throughout the academic year. Once you have submitted your complete application (including academic transcripts/ reference letters/ research proposal) we aim to process it within 14 working days. If you are seeking external funding please allow a generous amount of time between when you submit your application and the funding deadline in order to avoid complication. For information about our current studentships and their respective application deadlines please see the projects and research themes page.

After receipt of your application, we make an initial assessment of your suitability for PG study at Queen Mary.  If we decide to pursue your application further, we will invite you to interview. If it is impractical to interview you in person we will do so by skype or phone.  If you are able to attend in person, we often like to incorporate the interview into a wider programme of activities, such as meeting relevant members of staff and current PG research students, or even attending a study group or seminar in your chosen area of research.
