phd scholarship in agriculture in Netherlands

The deadline for applications is April 1, 2015.

We are looking for

a PhD student who will employ advanced geostatistical methods to optimise sampling designs used in integrated catchment water quality modelling. Hydrologic and hydraulic models require input data and data for parameter calibration and validation. Data collection can be costly and must therefore be optimised to gain maximum information for a given budget. This PhD research will optimise sampling designs in space and time using statistical tools from spatial uncertainty propagation analysis, statistical sampling theory and Bayesian calibration. Various sampling design optimisation techniques will be developed and tested, by making a trade-off between the cost of data collection and model output accuracy. Testing and validation is done for a Soil Water Assessment Tool applied to a catchment in Luxembourg and for minimisation of spatial and temporal rainfall estimation errors using radar data and rain gauges for a study area in the UK.

This research is part of the EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network project ‘QUICS’ (Grant agreement number 607000), in which partners from various universities, research institutes and commercial enterprises across Europe join forces to improve water quality management by assessing the uncertainty of integrated catchment model water quality predictions. The project involves twelve PhD students and four Postdocs. For more information about the QUICS project and the other PhD and PostDoc vacancies, see www.quics.eu.

We ask

a candidate with an MSc degree or equivalent in applied mathematics, statistics or hydrological/hydraulic sciences. Proven experience with statistical modelling is required. Ability to travel within the network is essential, as currently the position includes secondments in Luxembourg (six months) and Bristol (three months).

They must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work/studies) in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to May 1, 2015.

We offer

a fulltime employment (38 hours a week) as PhD researcher within the Soil Geography and Landscape group for 18 months with a possible extension of 30 months after a positive evaluation. The gross salary will increase from € 2125,- in the first year up to € 2717,- per month in the fourth year (based on fulltime employment). For our next PhD program starting in October 2015 we are looking for exceptionally motivated PhD candidates with a keen interest in genomics and medicine and a strong interest to work in teams.

The 2015 CeMM PhD program will focus on two thematic areas: infection and cancer, that are built on the pillars of epigenetics, bioinformatics and systems biology, chemical biology and the mechanism of action of drugs, high-throughput genetics, genomics and proteomics, and molecular and cell biology.

The choice of this strategic focus rests on the synergies between immunology, infection and cancer in pathophysiological and technological terms. It furthermore reflects the strength of the current CeMM faculty, itself built around the historical and contemporary expertise in immunology and cancer of the Medical University of Vienna.

As a CeMM PhD student you will get the chance to work at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary molecular medicine research and be trained by the entire CeMM and associated faculty to become one of the scientists shaping the future of molecular medicine.

Scholarship for PhD study or MSc study in Mechanical Engineering in turkey

Deadline for applications: 16.01.2015

Degree: PhD in mechanical engineering or MSc. in Mechanical Engineering

Scholarship: 1800 TL per month (PhD students) or 1500 TL per month (MSc Students) + Dormitory + Tuition Waiver

Duration: 3 years (PhD Students) or 2 years (MSc. Students)

Abstract: Single droplets or droplets in the form of a spray are used in many key technologies, such as combustion chambers of car engines and jet engines, surface coating, surface cooling, surface reactions, respiratory drug delivery, fire extinguishers, pesticide applications and inkjet applications. Besides those applications, there are harmful effects for example droplets imping to the blades of a steam turbines or pipes in nuclear or thermal power plants. The level of understanding of the wall-droplet interaction during impact of droplets determines the success of the developed technology and, moreover, allows the development of new technologies. The objective of the project is to conduct experimental and numerical investigations on the dynamics of droplet(s) impacting to a moving surface. Fundamental research will be made which is necessary for the coating of moving surfaces and generation of spray with the help of moving surfaces. Surfaces having different roughness, topology and wettability characteristics will be used, so that the results of the research can be applicable in a wide range of applications. Preliminary research will be made on the coating of LED chips to determine the operational limits of such coating. This project will help to generate knowledge and experience in the field of coating and spray in Turkey. The results can be used directly in technological applications. To utilize those results, contacts will be established with relevant companies and if applicable patents will be issued. In addition to those, short courses will be offered to the researchers working this field.
