At the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, Department of History and Religious Studies,there are two PhD positions vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD). The positions are affiliated to the research project Indigenous religion(s). Local Grounds, Global Networks.

The appointments are for a period of three years.
The PhD positions are for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for appointments, and the programme period starts on commencement in the positions. The PhD candidates shall participate in the faculty´s organized research training, and the PhD projects must be completed during the period of employment. The positions’ affiliation and the field of research
The Department of History and Religious Studies is one of seven departments in the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. The department has 16 permanent academic positions, of which 6 are in Religious Studies. The academic staff of the department teaches and gives supervision to students at all levels from bachelor to PhD. The department hosts eight different research groups.
The announced positions are affiliated to the research project Indigenous religion(s). Local Grounds, Global Networks (INREL), which involves an international core group of seven senior scholars. The main objective of INREL is to study relations between local and global discourses on indigenous religion(s), through case studies from a variety of regions and spaces and explorations of networks in an interconnected world.
The successful candidates will be an integral part of the research group INREL, and will develop their individual projects in relation to its main objectives, theoretical and methodological perspectives, and one or more of its thematic work packages (see project description here). One of the PhD projects will focus on a Central or South American case. For the second PhD project the choice of case study and geographical area is left for the applicants to decide. Knowledge of relevant languages is required. The successful candidates will be encouraged to spend one term at one of our partner institutions (see list here), and may include such plans in their proposals.
Qualification requirements
The successful applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty´s PhD programme, cf. Regulation of the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. In addition, she/he must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, referred to at the website PhD regulations at UiT.

This position requires a Master’s degree in religious studies or other relevant field. Personal suitability will also be taken into account.
The applicant must present a description outlining the academic basis of the PhD project.
Working conditions
The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
Remuneration for the position of PhD candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
Funding for fieldwork will be granted in addition to the salary.

- The works (published or unpublished) which the applicant wishes to be taken into consideration during the assessment process
- List of references with contact information.
CV, diplomas and transcripts must be certified and translated into English or a Scandinavian language.

Assessment
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:
- Master’s thesis or equivalent
- other academic works
In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and experience/education from other types of dissemination. Information and material to be considered during the assessment must be submitted by the stipulated deadline.
The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified may be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
