PhD studentships (funded by the Science Foundation Ireland) are available in the School of Mathematical Sciences in University College Cork. These PhD projects will address the mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations arising in the study of water waves. In particular, the project will focus on aspects of nonlinear wave-current interactions in the nearshore. The analysis will employ a variety of mathematical approaches, ranging from the rigorous analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations to some numerical studies.

The Department of Applied Mathematics has a strong research focus in the broad area of fluid dynamics, and there are close interdiciplinary connections between the Department and the Hydraulic and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) in UCC, and the recently established Marine Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) research institute.

All incoming PhD students in UCC will be registered in a structured PhD programme.

Candidate Profile
The successful applicant should have a 1st or upper 2nd class honour degree from the Irish or UK system- or the relevant European equivalent- in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. A desirable, although not strictly necessary, background would include knowledge of partial differential equations, mathematical analysis and fluid dynamics. A high standard of written and spoken English is considered compulsory.

Stipend
The studentship includes an annual stipend of €18,000, together with the full payment of annual tuition fees for European Union students. There will also be funding for international research visits and attendance at international conferences.

NOTE: the studentship does not cover full tuition fees for students from outside the EU.
